Collects, Epistles and Gospels
for the Proper of Saints

Saint Ignatius of Antioch, Bishop & Martyr

INTROIT. Mihi autem absit. Gal. 6.
GOD forbid that I should glory, save in the Cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world is crucified unto me, and I unto the world. Ps. 132. Lord, remember David: and all his trouble. V. Glory be.

COLLECT.
ALMIGHTY God, mercifully look upon our infirmities: that whereas we are afflicted by the burden of our sins, the glorious intercession of thy Martyr and Bishop Saint Ignatius may be our succour and defence. [Through]

EPISTLE. Romans 8:35-39
35 BRETHREN: Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?
36 As it is written, For thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter.
37 Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us.
38 For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come,
39 Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

GRADUAL. Ecclus. 44. Behold a great priest, who in his days pleased the Lord. V. There was none like unto him to keep the law of the Most High.
Alleluia, alleluia. V. Gal. 2. I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live, yet not I, but Christ liveth in me. Alleluia.

After Septuagesima, instead of the Alleluia, and verse following, is said:

TRACT. Ps. 21. Thou hast given him his heart's desire: and hast not denied him the request of his lips.. V. For thou hast prevented him with the blessings of goodness. V. Thou hast set a crown of pure gold upon his head.

GOSPEL. St John 12:24-26
[From Feast of Saint Lawrence, August 10th]
24 At that time: Jesus said unto his disciples: Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except a corn of wheat fall into the ground and die, it abideth alone: but if it die, it bringeth forth much fruit.
25 He that loveth his life shall lose it; and he that hateth his life in this world shall keep it unto life eternal.
26 If any man serve me, let him follow me; and where I am, there shall also my servant be: if any man serve me, him will my Father honour.

OFFERTORY. Ps. 8. Thou hast crowned him with glory and worship: and hast made him to have dominion of the works of thy hands, O Lord.

SECRET.
WE beseech thee, O Lord, graciously to accept this our sacrifice which we offer unto thee pleading the merits of thy holy Martyr and Bishop Saint Ignatius: that the same may effectually avail for our succour unto everlasting life. Through.

COMMUNION. I am the wheat of Christ: let me be ground by the teeth of beasts, that I may be found pure bread.

POSTCOMMUNION.
GRANT, we beseech thee, O Lord our God: that like as we whom thou hast made partakers of thy heavenly food do offer unto thee our outward worship, so, by the intercession of Saint Ignatius thy Martyr and Bishop, we may inwardly be profited thereby to our salvation. Through.
