for the Proper of Saints

Saint Agatha, Virgin & Martyr

Double

INTROIT. Gaudeamus.
REJOICE we all the Lord, keeping holy-day in honour of blessed Agatha, holy Virgin and Martyr: at whose passion the Angels rejoice and glorify the Son of God. Ps. 45. My heart is inditing of a good matter: I speak of the things which I have made unto the king. V. Glory be.

COLLECT.
O God, who among the manifold works of thine almighty power hast bestowed even upon the weakness of women strength to win the victory of martyrdom: grant, we beseech thee; that we, who on this day recall the heavenly birth of Saint Agatha thy Virgin and Martyr, may so follow in her footsteps, that we may likewise attain unto thee. [Through]

EPISTLE. 1 Corinthians 1:26-31
26 BRETHREN: ye see your calling, brethren, how that not many wise men after the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble, are called:
27 But God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty;
28 And base things of the world, and things which are despised, hath God chosen, yea, and things which are not, to bring to nought things that are:
29 That no flesh should glory in his presence.
30 But of him are ye in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption:
31 That, according as it is written, He that glorieth, let him glory in the Lord.

GRADUAL. Ps. 46. God shall help her with his countenance: God is in the midst of her, therefore shall she not be removed. V. The rivers of the flood shall make glad the city of God: the holy place of the tabernacle of the Most Highest.
Alleluia, alleluia. V. Ps. 119. I will speak of thy testimonies, also, even before kings:d and will not be ashamed. Alleluia.

After Septuagesima, instead of the Alleluia and verse following, is said:

TRACT. Ps. 126. They that sow in tears: shall reap in joy. V. They that now go on their way weeping, and bear forth good seed. V. They shall doubtless come again with joy, and bring their sheaves with them.

GOSPEL. St Matthew 19:3-12
3 The Pharisees also came unto him, tempting him, and saying unto him, Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife for every cause?
4 And he answered and said unto them, Have ye not read, that he which made them at the beginning made them male and female,
5 And said, For this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife: and they twain shall be one flesh?
6 Wherefore they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.
7 They say unto him, Why did Moses then command to give a writing of divorcement, and to put her away?
8 He saith unto them, Moses because of the hardness of your hearts suffered you to put away your wives: but from the beginning it was not so.
9 And I say unto you, Whosoever shall put away his wife, except it be for fornication, and shall marry another, committeth adultery: and whoso marrieth her which is put away doth commit adultery.
10 His disciples say unto him, If the case of the man be so with his wife, it is not good to marry.
11 But he said unto them, All men cannot receive this saying, save they to whom it is given.
12 For there are some eunuchs, which were so born from their mother's womb: and there are some eunuchs, which were made eunuchs of men: and there be eunuchs, which have made themselves eunuchs for the kingdom of heaven's sake. He that is able to receive it, let him receive it.

OFFERTORY. Ps. 45. The virgins that be her fellows shall bear her company: they shall be brought unto thee.

SECRET.
O LORD, who seest that we do trust for our deliverance in the advocacy of thy blessed Virgin and Martyr Saint Agatha: grant, we beseech thee, that the gifts which we offer unto thee on this her festival may be acceptable in thy sight. Through.

COMMUNION. He who deigned to heal my every wound, and to restore my breast unto my body, upon him do I call, even the living God.

POSTCOMMUNION.
ASSIST us mercifully, O Lord, which have here received these holy mysteries: and grant, that, at the intercession of blessed Agatha thy Virgin and Martyr, we may thereby be made worthy to rejoice in thy everlasting protection. Through.

In Lent, the Last Gospel of the Feria, in accordance with the Rubrics.
