Votive Mass 12, Suscitabo mihi
FOR A CONFESSOR BISHOP
INTROIT. Suscitabo mihi. I Sam. 2. I will raise me up a faithful priest, that shall do according
to that which is in mine heart and in my mind: and I will build
him a sure house, and he shall walk before mine Anointed for
ever (alleluia, alleluia. Ps. 132. Lord, remember David:
and all his trouble. V. Glory be.
The Collect.
O GOD, who didst wondrously adorn blessed Hugh thy Confessor
and Bishop, with pre-eminent merits and glorious miracles: mercifully
grant; that his example may be profitable unto us for our advancement,
and his godliness for our enlightenment. Through.
EPISTLE. Hebrews 4:16-5:7
16 BRETHREN: Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of
grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time
of need.
5:1 For every high priest taken from among men is ordained for
men in things pertaining to God, that he may offer both gifts
and sacrifices for sins:
2 Who can have compassion on the ignorant, and on them that are
out of the way; for that he himself also is compassed with infirmity.
3 And by reason hereof he ought, as for the people, so also for
himself, to offer for sins.
4 And no man taketh this honour unto himself, but he that is
called of God, as was Aaron.
5 So also Christ glorified not himself to be made an high priest;
but he that said unto him, Thou art my Son, today have I begotten
thee.
6 As he saith also in another place, Thou art a priest for ever
after the order of Melchisedec.
7 Who in the days of his flesh, when he had offered up prayers
and supplications with strong crying and tears unto him that
was able to save him from death, and was heard in that he feared.
GRADUAL. Lev. 21. He that is the high priest among his brethren,
upon whose head the anointing oil hath been poured, whose hands
have been consecrated for the priesthood, and that hath been
clothed with they holy garments: ought in all things to be made
like unto his brethren. V. Heb. 2. That he might be a
merciful and faithful high priest in things; pertaining to God:
to make reconciliation for the sins of the people.
Alleluia, alleluia. V. Lev. 21. Let the priest be holy,
for I the Lord which sanctify you am holy. Alleluia.
After Septuagesima, instead of the
Alleluia and verse following,
is said:
TRACT. Ps. 132. Arise, O Lord, into thy resting place: thou,
and the ark of thy strength.V. Let thy priests be clothed with
righteousness, and thy saints sing with joyfulness. V. For thy
servant David's sake, turn not away the presence of thine Anointed.
In Eastertide, instead of the Gradual, is said:
Alleluia, alleluia.Lev. 21. Let the priest be holy,
for I the Lord, which sanctify you, am holy. V. St. John 10.
I am the Good Shepherd: and know my sheep, and am known of mine.

GOSPEL. Saint John 14:15-31a
15 AT that time: Jesus said unto his disciples: If ye love me,
keep my commandments.
16 And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another
Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever;
17 Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because
it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he
dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.
18 I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you.
19 Yet a little while, and the world seeth me no more; but ye
see me: because I live, ye shall live also.
20 At that day ye shall know that I am in my Father, and ye in
me, and I in you.
21 He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that
loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father,
and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him.
22 Judas saith unto him, not Iscariot, Lord,
how is it that thou wilt manifest thyself unto us, and not unto
the world?
23 Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will
keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come
unto him, and make our abode with him.
24 He that loveth me not keepeth not my sayings: and the word
which ye hear is not mine, but the Father's which sent me.
25 These things have I spoken unto you, being yet present with
you.
26 But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father
will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring
all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.
27 Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the
world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled,
neither let it be afraid.
28 Ye have heard how I said unto you, I go away, and come again
unto you. If ye loved me,
ye would rejoice, because I said, I go unto the Father: for my
Father is greater than I.
29 And now I have told you before it come to pass, that, when
it is come to pass, ye might believe.
30 Hereafter I will not talk much with you: for the prince of
this world cometh, and hath nothing in me.
31 But that the world may know that I love the Father; and as
the Father gave me commandment, even so I do.
OFFERTORY. I Esdras. 5. They shall not be partakers
of the holy things until there arise up a high priest clothed
with doctrine and truth (alleluia).
SECRET. GRANT, O Lord, we pray thee, that our devlout observance
of this yearly festival of thy Confessor and Bishop blessed N.
may render us thy servants acceptable unto thy loving-kindnes:
that the oblation of this our bounden duty and service may be
profitable unto him in the reward of his godliness, and obtain
for us thy servants the bountiful gifts of thy grace. Through.
COMMUNION. St. Matt. 24. Blessed is that servant
whom his lord when he cometh shall find watching: verily I say
unto you, that he shall make him ruler over all his goods (alleluia).
POSTCOMMUNION. O GOD, who rewardest the souls of them that put their trust
in thee: grant, we beseech thee, that we who keep the solemn
feast of blessed N. thy Bishop and Confessor, may by his
prayers obtain the pardon of thy mercy. Through.
