Collects, Epistles and Gospels
for the Proper of Saints
Exaltation
of the Holy Cross
Greater Double
INTROIT. Nos autem gloriari. Gal. 6
BUT as for us, it behooveth us to glory in the Cross of our
Lord Jesus Christ: in whom is our salvation, our life and resurrection:
by whom we were saved and obtained our freedom. Ps. 67.
God be merciful unto us, and bless us: and shew us the light
of his countenance, and be merciful unto us. V. Glory be.
COLLECT.
O GOD, who dost gladden us upon this day by the festival of the
Exaltation of the holy Cross: grant that we who have acknowledged
the mystery of redemption here on earth, may rejoice in the everlasting
fruits thereof in heaven. Through.
The Epistle. Philippians 2:5-11
5 Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus:
6 Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be
equal with God:
7 But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form
of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men:
8 And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and
became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.
9 Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a
name which is above every name:
10 That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things
in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth;
11 And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is
Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
GRADUAL. Ibid. Christ became obedient unto death, even the
death of the Cross. V. Wherefore God also hath highly exalted
him: and given him a Name which is above every name.
Alleluia, alleluia. V. Sweetest wood, sweetest iron, that bare
so sweet a burthen: which only was counted worthy to sustain
the King of heaven, and its Lord., Alleluia.
The Gospel. St John 12:31-36
31 Now is the judgment of this world:
now shall the prince of this world be cast out.
32 And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men
unto me.
33 This he said, signifying what death he should die.
34 The people answered him, We have heard out of the law that
Christ abideth for ever: and how sayest thou, The Son of man
must be lifted up? who is this Son of man?
35 Then Jesus said unto them, Yet a little while is the light
with you. Walk while ye have the light, lest darkness come upon
you: for he that walketh in darkness knoweth not whither he goeth.
36 While ye have light, believe in the light, that ye may be
the children of light.
OFFERTORY. By
the sign of the holy Cross, defend, O Lord, thy people from all
the snares of their enemies: that the service which we render
maybe pleasing unto thee, and our sacrifice acceptable in thy
sight. Alleluia.
SECRET.
O Lord our God, who dost suffer
us to be fulfilled with the Body and Blood of thy Son Jesus Christ
our Lord, through whom thou hast sanctified unto us the standard
of the Cross: we humbly beseech thee; that like as we have been
counted worthy to venerate that Cross, so we may in everlasting
glory be made partakers of the saving benefits of the same. Through
the same.
PREFACE of the Cross.
COMMUNION.
By the sign of the Cross, deliver us from our enemies, O Lord
our God.
POSTCOMMUNION.
ASSIST us mercifully, O Lord our God: that we whom thou dost
suffer to rejoice in honouring the Holy Cross, may be defended
by the perpetual succour of the same. Through.
