The First
Lesson
1 Samuel 31
1 Now the Philistines fought against Israel: and the men of Israel
fled from before the Philistines, and fell down slain in mount
Gilboa.
2 And the Philistines followed hard upon Saul and upon his sons;
and the Philistines slew Jonathan, and Abinadab, and Melchi-shua,
Saul's sons.
3 And the battle went sore against Saul, and the archers hit
him; and he was sore wounded of the archers.
4 Then said Saul unto his armourbearer, Draw thy sword, and thrust
me through therewith; lest these uncircumcised come and thrust
me through, and abuse me. But his armourbearer would not; for
he was sore afraid. Therefore Saul took a sword, and fell upon
it.
5 And when his armourbearer saw that Saul was dead, he fell likewise
upon his sword, and died with him.
6 So Saul died, and his three sons, and his armourbearer, and
all his men, that same day together.
7 And when the men of Israel that were on the other side of the
valley, and they that were on the other side Jordan, saw that
the men of Israel fled, and that Saul and his sons were dead,
they forsook the cities, and fled; and the Philistines came and
dwelt in them.
8 And it came to pass on the morrow, when the Philistines came
to strip the slain, that they found Saul and his three sons fallen
in mount Gilboa.
9 And they cut off his head, and stripped off his armour, and
sent into the land of the Philistines round about, to publish
it in the house of their idols, and among the people.
10 And they put his armour in the house of Ashtaroth: and they
fastened his body to the wall of Beth-shan.
11 And when the inhabitants of Jabesh-gilead heard of that which
the Philistines had done to Saul;
12 All the valiant men arose, and went all night, and took the
body of Saul and the bodies of his sons from the wall of Beth-shan,
and came to Jabesh, and burnt them there.
13 And they took their bones, and buried them under a tree at
Jabesh, and fasted seven days.
1st Lesson Questions -
If I had to deliver Saul's eulogy, what would I have said? If I were to die today, what would my eulogy contain - good (godly) stuff, or would it be a bit like Saul's? RESOLVE.
The Second
Lesson
Luke 21:20-38
20 And when ye shall see Jerusalem compassed with armies, then
know that the desolation thereof is nigh.
21 Then let them which are in Judaea flee to the mountains; and
let them which are in the midst of it depart out; and let not
them that are in the countries enter thereinto.
22 For these be the days of vengeance, that all things which
are written may be fulfilled.
23 But woe unto them that are with child, and to them that give
suck, in those days! for there shall be great distress in the
land, and wrath upon this people.
24 And they shall fall by the edge of the sword, and shall be
led away captive into all nations: and Jerusalem shall be trodden
down of the Gentiles, until the times of the Gentiles be fulfilled.
25 And there shall be signs in the sun, and in the moon, and
in the stars; and upon the earth distress of nations, with perplexity;
the sea and the waves roaring;
26 Men's hearts failing them for fear, and for looking after
those things which are coming on the earth: for the powers of
heaven shall be shaken.
27 And then shall they see the Son of man coming in a cloud with
power and great glory.
28 And when these things begin to come to pass, then look up,
and lift up your heads; for your redemption draweth nigh.
29 And he spake to them a parable; Behold the fig tree, and all
the trees;
30 When they now shoot forth, ye see and know of your own selves
that summer is now nigh at hand.
31 So likewise ye, when ye see these things come to pass, know
ye that the kingdom of God is nigh at hand.
32 Verily I say unto you, This generation shall not pass away,
till all be fulfilled.
33 Heaven and earth shall pass away: but my words shall not pass
away.
34 And
take heed to yourselves, lest at any time your hearts be overcharged
with surfeiting, and drunkenness, and cares of this life, and
so that day come upon you unawares.
35 For as a snare shall it come on all them that dwell on the
face of the whole earth.
36 Watch ye therefore, and pray always, that ye may be accounted
worthy to escape all these things that shall come to pass, and
to stand before the Son of man.
37 And in the day time he was teaching in the temple; and at
night he went out, and abode in the mount that is called the
mount of Olives.
38 And all the people came early in the morning to him in the
temple, for to hear him.
2nd Lesson Questions -
