The First
Lesson
2 Samuel 12:15b-23
15 And the LORD struck the child that Uriah's wife bare unto
David, and it was very sick.
16 David therefore besought God for the child; and David fasted,
and went in, and lay all night upon the earth.
17 And the elders of his house arose, and went to him, to raise
him up from the earth: but he would not, neither did he eat bread
with them.
18 And it came to pass on the seventh day, that the child died.
And the servants of David feared to tell him that the child was
dead: for they said, Behold, while the child was yet alive, we
spake unto him, and he would not hearken unto our voice: how
will he then vex himself, if we tell him that the child is dead?
19 But when David saw that his servants whispered, David perceived
that the child was dead: therefore David said unto his servants,
Is the child dead? And they said, He is dead.
20 Then David arose from the earth, and washed, and anointed
himself, and changed his apparel, and came into the house of
the LORD, and worshipped: then he came to his own house; and
when he required, they set bread before him, and he did eat.
21 Then said his servants unto him, What thing is this that thou
hast done? thou didst fast and weep for the child, while it was
alive; but when the child was dead, thou didst rise and eat bread.
22 And he said, While the child was yet alive, I fasted and wept:
for I said, Who can tell whether GOD will be gracious to me,
that the child may live?
23 But now he is dead, wherefore should I fast? can I bring him
back again? I shall go to him, but he shall not return to me.
1st Lesson Questions -
Was David's attitude regarding the child a good one? How so? How would I have reacted, had I been David? RESOLVE.
The Second
Lesson
2 Corinthians 2
1 But I determined this with myself, that I would not come again
to you in heaviness.
2 For if I make you sorry, who is he then that maketh me glad,
but the same which is made sorry by me?
3 And I wrote this same unto you, lest, when I came, I should
have sorrow from them of whom I ought to rejoice; having confidence
in you all, that my joy is the joy of you all.
4 For out of much affliction and anguish of heart I wrote unto
you with many tears; not that ye should be grieved, but that
ye might know the love which I have more abundantly unto you.
5 But if any have caused grief, he hath not grieved me, but in
part: that I may not overcharge you all.
6 Sufficient to such a man is this punishment, which was inflicted
of many.
7 So that contrariwise ye ought rather to forgive him, and comfort
him, lest perhaps such a one should be swallowed up with overmuch
sorrow.
8 Wherefore I beseech you that ye would confirm your love toward
him.
9 For
to this end also did I write, that I might know the proof of
you, whether ye be obedient in all things.
10 To whom ye forgive any thing, I forgive also: for if I forgave
any thing, to whom I forgave it, for your sakes forgave I it
in the person of Christ;
11 Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant
of his devices.
12 Furthermore, when I came to Troas to preach Christ's gospel,
and a door was opened unto me of the Lord,
13 I had no rest in my spirit, because I found not Titus my brother:
but taking my leave of them, I went from thence into Macedonia.
14 Now thanks be unto God, which always causeth us to triumph
in Christ, and maketh manifest the savour of his knowledge by
us in every place.
15 For we are unto God a sweet savour of Christ, in them that
are saved, and in them that perish:
16 To the one we are the savour of death unto death; and to the
other the savour of life unto life. And who is sufficient for
these things?
17 For
we are not as many, which corrupt the word of God: but as of
sincerity, but as of God, in the sight of God speak we in Christ.
2nd Lesson Questions -
Am I obedient in all things, in Christ? (V. 9) What keeps me from being so? What's the difference between a person who corrupts God's word and a man of sincerity? (V. 17) Have I known a corruptor? RESOLVE.
