The First
Lesson
Ezra 8:15a, 21-23, 31-36
15 And I gathered them together to the river that runneth to
Ahava; and there abode we in tents three days:
21 Then I proclaimed a fast there, at the river of Ahava, that
we might afflict ourselves before our God, to seek of him a right
way for us, and for our little ones, and for all our substance.
22 For I was ashamed to require of the king a band of soldiers
and horsemen to help us against the enemy in the way: because
we had spoken unto the king, saying, The hand of our God is upon
all them for good that seek him; but his power and his wrath
is against all them that forsake him.
23 So we fasted and besought our God for this: and he was entreated
of us.
31 Then we departed from the river of Ahava on the twelfth day
of the first month, to go unto Jerusalem: and the hand of our
God was upon us, and he delivered us from the hand of the enemy,
and of such as lay in wait by the way.
32 And we came to Jerusalem, and abode there three days.
33 Now on the fourth day was the silver and the gold and the
vessels weighed in the house of our God by the hand of Meremoth
the son of Uriah the priest; and with him was Eleazar the son
of Phinehas; and with them was Jozabad the son of Jeshua, and
Noadiah the son of Binnui, Levites;
34 By number and by weight of every one: and all the weight was
written at that time.
35 Also the children of those that had been carried away, which
were come out of the captivity, offered burnt offerings unto
the God of Israel, twelve bullocks for all Israel, ninety and
six rams, seventy and seven lambs, twelve he goats for a sin
offering: all this was a burnt offering unto the LORD.
36 And they delivered the king's commissions unto the king's
lieutenants, and to the governors on this side the river: and
they furthered the people, and the house of God.

The Second
Lesson
Acts 11:19-30
19 Now they which were scattered abroad upon the persecution
that arose about Stephen travelled as far as Phenice, and Cyprus,
and Antioch, preaching the word to none but unto the Jews only.
20 And some of them were men of Cyprus and Cyrene, which, when
they were come to Antioch, spake unto the Grecians, preaching
the Lord Jesus.
21 And the hand of the Lord was with them: and a great number
believed, and turned unto the Lord.
22 Then tidings of these things came unto the ears of the church
which was in Jerusalem: and they sent forth Barnabas, that he
should go as far as Antioch.
23 Who,
when he came, and had seen the grace of God, was glad, and exhorted
them all, that with purpose of heart they would cleave unto the
Lord.
24 For he was a good man, and full of the Holy Ghost and of faith:
and much people was added unto the Lord.
25 Then departed Barnabas to Tarsus, for to seek Saul:
26 And when he had found him, he brought him unto Antioch. And
it came to pass, that a whole year they assembled themselves
with the church, and taught much people. And the disciples were
called Christians first in Antioch.
27 And in these days came prophets from Jerusalem unto Antioch.
28 And there stood up one of them named Agabus, and signified
by the Spirit that there should be great dearth throughout all
the world: which came to pass in the days of Claudius Caesar.
29 Then the disciples, every man according to his ability, determined
to send relief unto the brethren which dwelt in Judaea:
30 Which also they did, and sent it to the elders by the hands
of Barnabas and Saul.
