Third Sunday after Epiphany
First Lesson
Isaiah 41:8-10, 17-20
8 But thou, Israel, art my servant, Jacob whom I have chosen,
the seed of Abraham my friend.
9 Thou whom I have taken from the ends of the earth, and called
thee from the chief men thereof, and said unto thee, Thou art
my servant; I have chosen thee, and not cast thee away.
10 Fear
thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God:
I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold
thee with the right hand of my righteousness.
17 When the poor and needy seek water, and there is none, and
their tongue faileth for thirst, I the LORD will hear them, I
the God of Israel will not forsake them.
18 I will open rivers in high places, and fountains in the midst
of the valleys: I will make the wilderness a pool of water, and
the dry land springs of water.
19 I will plant in the wilderness the cedar, the shittah tree,
and the myrtle, and the oil tree; I will set in the desert the
fir tree, and the pine, and the box tree together:
20 That they may see, and know, and consider, and understand
together, that the hand of the LORD hath done this, and the Holy
One of Israel hath created it.
1st Lesson Questions:
Isaiah 41:8-10,17-20. Am I any part of this passage's Israel? How so? Do I believe that God is with me, or am I fearful, much of the time? (V. 10) RESOLVE.
Second Lesson
John 4:1-14
1 When therefore the Lord knew how the Pharisees had heard that
Jesus made and baptized more disciples than John,
2 (Though Jesus himself baptized not, but his disciples,)
3 He left Judaea, and departed again into Galilee.
4 And he must needs go through Samaria.
5 Then cometh he to a city of Samaria, which is called Sychar,
near to the parcel of ground that Jacob gave to his son Joseph.
6 Now Jacob's well was there. Jesus therefore, being wearied
with his journey, sat thus on the well: and it was about the
sixth hour.
7 There cometh a woman of Samaria to draw water: Jesus saith
unto her, Give me to drink.
8 (For his disciples were gone away unto the city to buy meat.)
9 Then saith the woman of Samaria unto him, How is it that thou,
being a Jew, askest drink of me, which am a woman of Samaria?
for the Jews have no dealings with the Samaritans.
10 Jesus answered and said unto her, If thou knewest the gift
of God, and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink; thou
wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living
water.
11 The woman saith unto him, Sir, thou hast nothing to draw with,
and the well is deep: from whence then hast thou that living
water?
12 Art thou greater than our father Jacob, which gave us the
well, and drank thereof himself, and his children, and his cattle?
13 Jesus answered and said unto her, Whosoever drinketh of this
water shall thirst again:
14 But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him
shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall
be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.
2nd Lesson Questions:
John 4:1-14. If I had been at the well, what would Jesus have said to me? RESOLVE.
