The First
Lesson
1 Maccabees 3:1-9
1 Then his son Judas, called Maccabeus, rose up in his stead.
2 And all his brethren helped him, and so did all they that held
with his father, and they fought with cheerfulness the battle
of Israel.
3 So he gat his people great honour, and put on a breastplate
as a giant, and girt his warlike harness about him, and he made
battles, protecting the host with his sword.
4 In his
acts he was like a lion, and like a lion's whelp roaring for
his prey.
5 For He pursued the wicked, and sought them out, and burnt up
those that vexed his people.
6 Wherefore the wicked shrunk for fear of him, and all the workers
of iniquity were troubled, because salvation prospered in his
hand.
7 He grieved also many kings, and made Jacob glad with his acts,
and his memorial is blessed for ever.
8 Moreover he went through the cities of Juda, destroying the
ungodly out of them, and turning away wrath from Israel:
9 So that he was renowned unto the utmost part of the earth,
and he received unto him such as were ready to perish.
1st Lesson Questions -
What is it to be "like a lion's whelp roaring for his prey"? (V. 4) Am I like that , in reference to my faith? Do any of the wicked fear my ministry, or the workers of iniquity troubled because of my work for Christ? (V. 6) RESOLVE.
The
Second Lesson
Acts 18:1-11
1 After these things Paul departed from Athens, and came to Corinth:
2 And found a certain Jew named Aquila, born in Pontus, lately
come from Italy, with his wife Priscilla; (because that Claudius
had commanded all Jews to depart from Rome:) and came unto them.
3 And because he was of the same craft, he abode with them, and
wrought: for by their occupation they were tentmakers.
4 And he reasoned in the synagogue every sabbath, and persuaded
the Jews and the Greeks.
5 And when Silas and Timotheus were come from Macedonia, Paul
was pressed in the spirit, and testified to the Jews that Jesus
was Christ.
6 And when they opposed themselves, and blasphemed, he shook
his raiment, and said unto them, Your blood be upon your own
heads; I am clean: from henceforth I will go unto the Gentiles.
7 And he departed thence, and entered into a certain man's house,
named Justus, one that worshipped God, whose house joined hard
to the synagogue.
8 And Crispus, the chief ruler of the synagogue, believed on
the Lord with all his house; and many of the Corinthians hearing
believed, and were baptized.
9 Then
spake the Lord to Paul in the night by a vision, Be not afraid,
but speak, and hold not thy peace:
10 For I am with thee, and no man shall set on thee to hurt thee:
for I have much people in this city.
11 And he continued there a year and six months, teaching the
word of God among them.
2nd Lesson Questions -
God told Paul not to be afraid and to go ahead and preach. (v. 9, 10) Do I need to hear those words, too, in my life? Has fear silenced me? When? What was the outcome? RESOLVE.
