The First
Lesson
Ruth 3:1-13
1 Then Naomi her mother-in-law said unto her, My daughter, shall
I not seek rest for thee, that it may be well with thee?
2 And now is not Boaz of our kindred, with whose maidens thou
wast? Behold, he winnoweth barley tonight in the threshingfloor.
3 Wash thyself therefore, and anoint thee, and put thy raiment
upon thee, and get thee down to the floor: but make not thyself
known unto the man, until he shall have done eating and drinking.
4 And it shall be, when he lieth down, that thou shalt mark the
place where he shall lie, and thou shalt go in, and uncover his
feet, and lay thee down; and he will tell thee what thou shalt
do.
5 And she said unto her, All that thou sayest unto me I will
do.
6 And she went down unto the floor, and did according to all
that her mother-in-law bade her.
7 And when Boaz had eaten and drunk, and his heart was merry,
he went to lie down at the end of the heap of corn: and she came
softly, and uncovered his feet, and laid her down.
8 And it came to pass at midnight, that the man was afraid, and
turned himself: and, behold, a woman lay at his feet.
9 And he said, Who art thou? And she answered, I am Ruth thine
handmaid: spread therefore thy skirt over thine handmaid; for
thou art a near kinsman.
10 And he said, Blessed be thou of the LORD, my daughter: for
thou hast shown more kindness in the latter end than at the beginning,
inasmuch as thou followedst not young men, whether poor or rich.
11 And now, my daughter, fear not; I will do to thee all that
thou requirest: for all the city of my people doth know that
thou art a virtuous woman.
12 And now it is true that I am thy near kinsman: howbeit there
is a kinsman nearer than I.
13 Tarry
this night, and it shall be in the morning, that if he will perform
unto thee the part of a kinsman, well; let him do the kinsman's
part: but if he will not do the part of a kinsman to thee, then
will I do the part of a kinsman to thee, as the LORD liveth:
lie down until the morning.
1st Lesson Questions -
What is it to do "the part of a kinsman"? (V. 13) See Leviticus 25:25 and Deuteronomy 25:5-6. RESOLVE.
The
Second Lesson
Luke 10:25-37
25 And, behold, a certain lawyer stood up, and tempted him, saying,
Master, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?
26 He said unto him, What is written in the law? how readest
thou?
27 And he answering said, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with
all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength,
and with all thy mind; and thy neighbour as thyself.
28 And he said unto him, Thou hast answered right: this do, and
thou shalt live.
29 But he, willing to justify himself, said unto Jesus, And who
is my neighbour?
30 And Jesus answering said, A certain man went down from Jerusalem
to Jericho, and fell among thieves, which stripped him of his
raiment, and wounded him, and departed, leaving him half dead.
31 And by chance there came down a certain priest that way: and
when he saw him, he passed by on the other side.
32 And likewise a Levite, when he was at the place, came and
looked on him, and passed by on the other side.
33 But a certain Samaritan, as he journeyed, came where he was:
and when he saw him, he had compassion on him,
34 And went to him, and bound up his wounds, pouring in oil and
wine, and set him on his own beast, and brought him to an inn,
and took care of him.
35 And on the morrow when he departed, he took out two pence,
and gave them to the host, and said unto him, Take care of him;
and whatsoever thou spendest more, when I come again, I will
repay thee.
36 Which now of these three, thinkest thou, was neighbour unto
him that fell among the thieves?
37 And he said, He that showed mercy on him. Then said Jesus
unto him, Go, and do thou likewise.
2nd Lesson Questions -
Which of these fellows have I been most like during the last week - the priest, Levite or Samaritan? Why? Is it easy to show mercy to others? RESOLVE.
