The First
Lesson
1 Samuel 1:21-28, 2:11
21 And the man Elkanah, and all his house, went up to offer unto
the LORD the yearly sacrifice, and his vow.
22 But Hannah went not up; for she said unto her husband, I will
not go up until the child be weaned, and then I will bring him,
that he may appear before the LORD, and there abide for ever.
23 And Elkanah her husband said unto her, Do what seemeth thee
good; tarry until thou have weaned him; only the LORD establish
his word. So the woman abode, and gave her son suck until she
weaned him.
24 And when she had weaned him, she took him up with her, with
three bullocks, and one ephah of flour, and a bottle of wine,
and brought him unto the house of the LORD in Shiloh: and the
child was young.
25 And they slew a bullock, and brought the child to Eli.
26 And she said, Oh my lord, as thy soul liveth, my lord, I am
the woman that stood by thee here, praying unto the LORD.
27 For this child I prayed; and the LORD hath given me my petition
which I asked of him:
28 Therefore also I have lent him to the LORD; as long as he
liveth he shall be lent to the LORD. And he worshipped the LORD
there.
11 And Elkanah went to Ramah to his house. And the child did
minister unto the LORD before Eli the priest.
1st Lesson Questions -
Had I been Hannah, would I have tried to get out of my promise to God? What promises have I tried to weasel out of, with the Lord? Which ones have I not kept? How am I doing, insofar as my "bounden duty" as a member of the Church is concerned? (page 291, Book of Common Prayer) RESOLVE.
The Second
Lesson
Luke 12:1-12
1 In the mean time, when there were gathered together an innumerable
multitude of people, insomuch that they trode one upon another,
he began to say unto his disciples first of all, Beware ye of
the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy.
2 For there is nothing covered, that shall not be revealed; neither
hid, that shall not be known.
3 Therefore whatsoever ye have spoken in darkness shall be heard
in the light; and that which ye have spoken in the ear in closets
shall be proclaimed upon the housetops.
4 And I say unto you my friends, Be not afraid of them that kill
the body, and after that have no more that they can do.
5 But
I will forewarn you whom ye shall fear: Fear him, which after
he hath killed hath power to cast into hell; yea, I say unto
you, Fear him.
6 Are not five sparrows sold for two farthings, and not one of
them is forgotten before God?
7 But even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear
not therefore: ye are of more value than many sparrows.
8 Also I say unto you, Whosoever shall confess me before men,
him shall the Son of man also confess before the angels of God:
9 But he that denieth me before men shall be denied before the
angels of God.
10 And
whosoever shall speak a word against the Son of man, it shall
be forgiven him: but unto him that blasphemeth against the Holy
Ghost it shall not be forgiven.
11 And
when they bring you unto the synagogues, and unto magistrates,
and powers, take ye no thought how or what thing ye shall answer,
or what ye shall say:
12 For the Holy Ghost shall teach you in the same hour what ye
ought to say.
2nd Lesson Questions -
Who is that alluded to in V. 5? What is it to blaspheme against the Holy Spirit? (V. 10) Why won't that sin be forgiven? Is verse 11 a possibility in our day, or was Jesus' warning just for those who were with Him at that time? What's the last magistrate or power with which I had to deal? RESOLVE.
