First Lesson
Amos 3
1 Hear this word that the LORD hath spoken against you, O children
of Israel, against the whole family which I brought up from the
land of Egypt, saying,
2 You only have I known of all the families of the earth: therefore
I will punish you for all your iniquities.
3 Can
two walk together, except they be agreed?
4 Will a lion roar in the forest, when he hath no prey? will
a young lion cry out of his den, if he have taken nothing?
5 Can a bird fall in a snare upon the earth, where no gin is
for him? shall one take up a snare from the earth, and have taken
nothing at all?
6 Shall a trumpet be blown in the city, and the people not be
afraid? shall there be evil in a city, and the LORD hath not
done it?
7 Surely the Lord GOD will do nothing, but he revealeth his secret
unto his servants the prophets.
8 The lion hath roared, who will not fear? the Lord GOD hath
spoken, who can but prophesy?
9 Publish in the palaces at Ashdod, and in the palaces in the
land of Egypt, and say, Assemble yourselves upon the mountains
of Samaria, and behold the great tumults in the midst thereof,
and the oppressed in the midst thereof.
10 For they know not to do right, saith the LORD, who store up
violence and robbery in their palaces.
11 Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD; An adversary there shall
be even round about the land; and he shall bring down thy strength
from thee, and thy palaces shall be spoiled.
12 Thus saith the LORD; As the shepherd taketh out of the mouth
of the lion two legs, or a piece of an ear; so shall the children
of Israel be taken out that dwell in Samaria in the corner of
a bed, and in Damascus in a couch.
13 Hear ye, and testify in the house of Jacob, saith the Lord
GOD, the God of hosts,
14 That in the day that I shall visit the transgressions of Israel
upon him I will also visit the altars of Beth-el: and the horns
of the altar shall be cut off, and fall to ground.
15 And
I will smite the winter house with the summer house; and the
houses of ivory shall perish, and the great houses shall have
an end, saith the LORD.
1st Lesson Questions -
What are the answers of Vs. 3-6? What great houses of our time will come to an end? (V. 15) RESOLVE.
Second Lesson
Galatians 2:11-21
11 But when Peter was come to Antioch, I withstood him to the
face, because he was to be blamed.
12 For before that certain came from James, he did eat with the
Gentiles: but when they were come, he withdrew and separated
himself, fearing them which were of the circumcision.
13 And the other Jews dissembled likewise with him; insomuch
that Barnabas also was carried away with their dissimulation.
14 But when I saw that they walked not uprightly according to
the truth of the gospel, I said unto Peter before them all, If
thou, being a Jew, livest after the manner of Gentiles, and not
as do the Jews, why compellest thou the Gentiles to live as do
the Jews?
15 We who are Jews by nature, and not sinners of the Gentiles,
16 Knowing
that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the
faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ,
that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by
the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh
be justified.
17 But if, while we seek to be justified by Christ, we ourselves
also are found sinners, is therefore Christ the minister of sin?
God forbid.
18 For if I build again the things which I destroyed, I make
myself a transgressor.
19 For I through the law am dead to the law, that I might live
unto God.
20 I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I,
but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the
flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and
gave himself for me.
21 I
do not frustrate the grace of God: for if righteousness come
by the law, then Christ is dead in vain.
2nd Lesson Questions -
Since man is justified by faith, why do any works? (V. 16)
Have I frustrated God's grace in my life this past week? (V. 21) How so? Why? How often do I do so? RESOLVE.
