The Epistle. Ecclesiasticus 51.1
[Mass 21, Me expectaverunt]
I will thank thee, O Lord and King, and praise thee, O God my
saviour: I do give praise unto thy Name: for thou art my defender
and helper, and hast preserved my body from destruction, and
from the snare of the slanderous tongue, and from the lips that
forge lies, and hast been mine helper against mine adversaries:
and hast delivered me according to the multitude of thy mercies
and greatness of thy Name, from the teeth of them that were ready
to devour me, and out of the hands of such as sought after my
life, and from the manifold afflictions which I had; from the
choking of fire on every side, and from the midst of the fire
which I kindled not; from the depth of the belly of hell, from
an unclean tongue, and from lying words. By an accusation to
the king from an unrighteous tongue my soul drew near even unto
death, my life was near to the hell beneath. They compassed me
on every side, and there was no man to help me; I looked for
the succour of men, but there was none. Then thought I upon thy
mercy, O Lord, and upon thy acts of old, how thou deliverest
such as wait for thee, and savest them out of the hands of the
enemies, O Lord our God.
GRADUAL. Ps. 112. He hath dispersed abroad, and given to the poor:
and his righteousness remaineth for ever. V. His seed shall be
mighty upon earth: the generation of the faithful shall be blessed.
GOSPEL. St Matthew 16. 24
At that time: Jesus said unto his disciples:
If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take
up his Cross, and follow me. For whosoever will save his life
shall lose it; and whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall
find it. For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole
world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange
for his soul? For the Son of Man shall come in the glory of his
Father with his Angels: and then he shall reward every man according
to his works.
OFFERTORY. Job 16 My prayer is pure: and therefore I ask that
a place may be given to my voice in heaven: for my witness is
in heaven, and my record is on high: let my prayer ascend to
the Lord.
SECRET.
ACCEPT, O merciful Lord, the
sacrifice which we offer unto thee: and, at the intercession
of blessed Lawrence thy Martyr, deliver us from the bonds of
all our iniquities. Through.
COMMUNION. St. Matt. 16. If any man will come after me, let him deny
himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.
POSTCOMMUNION.
Grant, we beseech thee, O Lord
our God: that, like as we in this life do gladly honour the memory
of blessed Lawrence thy Martyr; so we may in heaven rejoice in
his eternal fellowship. Through.
