Mass 6, Intret in conspectu
FOR SEVERAL MARTYRS
INTROIT. Intret in conspectu. Ps. 79.
O LET the sorrowful sighing of the prisoners come before thee,
O Lord: reward thou our neighbours sevenfold into their bosom:
let the vengeance of thy servants' blood that is shed be openly
shewed up the heath. Ps. ibid. O God, the heathen are
come into thine inheritance, thy holy temple have they defiled:
and made Jerusalem an heap of stones. V. Glory be.
COLLECT.
ASSIST us mercifully, O Lord, in these our supplications: that
whereas we are tied and bound by the chain of our sins; the intercession
of thy blessed Martyrs Vincent and Anastasius may speedily help
and deliver us. Through.
EPISTLE. Wisdom
3:1-8
1 The souls of the righteous
are in the hand of God, and there shall no torment touch them.
2 In the sight of the unwise they seemed to die: and their departure
is taken for misery,
3 And their going from us to be utter destruction: but they are
in peace.
4 For though they be punished in the sight of men, yet is their
hope full of immortality.
5 And having been a little chastised, they shall be greatly rewarded:
for God proved them, and found them worthy for himself.
6 As gold in the furnace hath he tried them, and received them
as a burnt offering.
7 And in the time of their visitation they shall shine, and run
to and fro like sparks among the stubble.
8 They shall judge the nations, and have dominion over the people,
and their Lord shall reign for ever.
GRADUAL. Exod. 15. The Lord is glorious in holiness: fearful in
praises, doing wonders. V. Thy right hand, O Lord, is become
glorious in power: thy right hand, O Lord, hath dashed in pieces
the enemy.
Alleluia, alleluia. V. Ecclus. 44. the bodies of the Saints
are buried in peace: but their name liveth for evermore. Alleluia.
GOSPEL. St Luke 21:9-19
9 At that time: Jesus said unto his
disciples: ye shall hear of wars and commotions, be not terrified:
for these things must first come to pass; but the end is not
by and by.
10 Then said he unto them, Nation shall rise against nation,
and kingdom against kingdom:
11 And great earthquakes shall be in divers places, and famines,
and pestilences; and fearful sights and great signs shall there
be from heaven.
12 But before all these, they shall lay their hands on you, and
persecute you, delivering you up to the synagogues, and into
prisons, being brought before kings and rulers for my name's
sake.
13 And it shall turn to you for a testimony.
14 Settle it therefore in your hearts, not to meditate before
what ye shall answer:
15 For I will give you a mouth and wisdom, which all your adversaries
shall not be able to gainsay nor resist.
16 And ye shall be betrayed both by parents, and brethren, and
kinsfolks, and friends; and some of you shall they cause to be
put to death.
17 And ye shall be hated of all men for my name's sake.
18 But there shall not an hair of your head perish.
19 In your patience possess ye your souls.
After Septuagesima Alleluia at the end of the following Offertory
is omitted, but otherwise it is said through the year.
OFFERTORY. Ps. 68. O God, wonderful art thou in thy Saints: even
the God of Israel, he will give strength and power unto his people,
blessed by God (alleluia).

COMMUNION. Wisd. 3. For though they be punished in the sight of
men, yet hath God proved them: as gold in the furnace hath he
