The Proper of Saints
[Missal]

Saint Columba, Abbot

INTROIT. Si sumpsero. Ps. 139
If I take the wings of the morning, and remain in the uttermost parts of the sea: even there also shall thy hand lead me, and thy right had shall hold me (alleluia, alleluia). Ps. ibid. O Lord, thou hast searched me out and known me: thou knowest my down-sitting and mine up-rising. V. Glory be.

The Collect.
WE pray thee, O Lord, inspire our hearts with the desire of heavenly glory: and grant that we, bringing our sheaves with us, may thither attain where the holy Abbot Columba shineth like a star before thee. Through.

The Epistle. Ecclesiasticus 45:1b-5a
[From Mass 16, Os justi]
1. He was loved of God and men, whose memorial is blessed.
2 The Lord made him like to the glorious Saints, and magnified him, so that his enemies stood in fear of him.
3 By his words he caused the wonders to cease: he made him glorious in the sight of kings, and gave him a commandment for his people, and shewed him his glory.
4 He sanctified him in his faithfulness and meekness, and chose him out of all men.
5 He made him to hear his voice, and brought him into the dark cloud, and gave him commandments before his face, even the law of life and knowledge.

Gradual. Wisdom 11. The Lord prospered their works in the hand of the holy prophet. V. They went through the wilderness that was not inhabited, and pitched tents in places whyere there lay no way.
Alleluia, alleluia. V. Isaiah 52. How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him that bringeth good tidings, that publisheth peace; that bringeth good tidings of good, that publisheth salvation. Alleluia.

In Eastertide, instead of the Gradual, is said:

Alleluia, alleluia. V. Isaiah 52. How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him that bringeth good tidings, that publisheth peace; that bringeth good tidings of good, that publisheth salvation. Alleluia. V. Isaiah 42. He shall set judgement in the earth: and the isles shall wait for his law.

The Gospel. St Matthew 19:27-29
[From Mass 16, Os justi]
27 Then answered Peter and said unto him, Behold, we have forsaken all, and followed thee; what shall we have therefore?
28 And Jesus said unto them, Verily I say unto you, That ye which have followed me, in the regeneration when the Son of man shall sit in the throne of his glory, ye also shall sit upon twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.
29 And every one that hath forsaken houses, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, for my name's sake, shall receive an hundredfold, and shall inherit everlasting life.

Offertory. Ecclesiasticus 50. When he put on the robe of honour, and was clothed with the perfection of glory, when he went up to the holy altar, he made the garment of holiness honourable. When he took the portions out of the priests' hands, he himself stood by the hearth of the altar, compassed with his brethren round about (alleluia).

Secret.
[From Mass 16, Os justi]
We beseech thee, O Lord, that thy holy Abbot Columba may intercede for us: that this sacrifice which we offer and present upon thy holy altar may be profitable unto us for our salvation. Through.

Communion. I Kings 19. He did eat and drink, and went in the strength of that meat unto the mount of God. Alleluia.

Postcommunion.
[From Mass 16, Os justi]
O LORD, we pray thee that this holy Sacrament which we have now received and the prayers of thy holy Abbot, blessed Columba may effectually defend us: that we may both imitate the example of his conversation, and perceive the succour of his intercession. Through.
