14th Sunday after Trinity
The First
Lesson
Micah 6:1-8
1 Hear ye now what the LORD saith; Arise, contend thou before
the mountains, and let the hills hear thy voice.
2 Hear ye, O mountains, the LORD'S controversy, and ye strong
foundations of the earth: for the LORD hath a controversy with
his people, and he will plead with Israel.
3 O my people, what have I done unto thee? and wherein have I
wearied thee? testify against me.
4 For I brought thee up out of the land of Egypt, and redeemed
thee out of the house of servants; and I sent before thee Moses,
Aaron, and Miriam.
5 O my people, remember now what Balak king of Moab consulted,
and what Balaam the son of Beor answered him from Shittim unto
Gilgal; that ye may know the righteousness of the LORD.
6 Wherewith shall I come before the LORD, and bow myself before
the high God? shall I come before him with burnt offerings, with
calves of a year old?
7 Will the LORD be pleased with thousands of rams, or with ten
thousands of rivers of oil? shall I give my firstborn for my
transgression, the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul?
8 He hath shown thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the
LORD require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and
to walk humbly with thy God?
1st Lesson Questions -
God had a controversy with His people during Micah's time. What's His controversy with man in our day? What is it with me? RESOLVE.
The Second
Lesson
Philippians 4:4-13
4 Rejoice in the Lord always: and again I say, Rejoice.
5 Let your moderation be known unto all men. The Lord is at hand.
6 Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication
with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.
7 And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall
keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.
8 Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things
are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are
pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of
good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise,
think on these things.
9 Those things, which ye have both learned, and received, and
heard, and seen in me, do: and the God of peace shall be with
you.
10 But I rejoiced in the Lord greatly, that now at the last your
care of me hath flourished again; wherein ye were also careful,
but ye lacked opportunity.
11 Not that I speak in respect of want: for I have learned, in
whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content.
12 I know both how to be abased, and I know how to abound: every
where and in all things I am instructed both to be full and to
be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need.
13 I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.
2nd Lesson Questions -
What does this passage tell me I ought to do, if I want to have God's peace in my life? Am I doing it? RESOLVE.
