The First
Lesson
1 Samuel 9:11-21
11 And as they went up the hill to the city, they found young
maidens going out to draw water, and said unto them, Is the seer
here?
12 And they answered them, and said, He is; behold, he is before
you: make haste now, for he came today to the city; for there
is a sacrifice of the people today in the high place:
13 As soon as ye be come into the city, ye shall straightway
find him, before he go up to the high place to eat: for the people
will not eat until he come, because he doth bless the sacrifice;
and afterwards they eat that be bidden. Now therefore get you
up; for about this time ye shall find him.
14 And they went up into the city: and when they were come into
the city, behold, Samuel came out against them, for to go up
to the high place.
15 Now the LORD had told Samuel in his ear a day before Saul
came, saying,
16 Tomorrow about this time I will send thee a man out of the
land of Benjamin, and thou shalt anoint him to be captain over
my people Israel, that he may save my people out of the hand
of the Philistines: for I have looked upon my people, because
their cry is come unto me.
17 And when Samuel saw Saul, the LORD said unto him, Behold the
man whom I spake to thee of! this same shall reign over my people.
18 Then Saul drew near to Samuel in the gate, and said, Tell
me, I pray thee, where the seer's house is.
19 And Samuel answered Saul, and said, I am the seer: go up before
me unto the high place; for ye shall eat with me today, and tomorrow
I will let thee go, and will tell thee all that is in thine heart.
20 And as for thine asses that were lost three days ago, set
not thy mind on them; for they are found. And on whom is all
the desire of Israel? Is it not on thee, and on all thy father's
house?
21 And Saul answered and said, Am not I a Benjamite, of the smallest
of the tribes of Israel? and my family the least of all the families
of the tribe of Benjamin? wherefore then speakest thou so to
me?
1st Lesson Questions -
Is humility a necessary virtue to possess, before God can work through a person? Did Saul have it at this time? RESOLVE.
The Second
Lesson
Luke 13:22-35
22 And he went through the cities and villages, teaching, and
journeying toward Jerusalem.
23 Then said one unto him, Lord, are there few that be saved?
And he said unto them,
24 Strive to enter in at the strait gate: for many, I say unto
you, will seek to enter in, and shall not be able.
25 When
once the master of the house is risen up, and hath shut to the
door, and ye begin to stand without, and to knock at the door,
saying, Lord, Lord, open unto us; and he shall answer and say
unto you, I know you not whence ye are:
26 Then shall ye begin to say, We have eaten and drunk in thy
presence, and thou hast taught in our streets.
27 But he shall say, I tell you, I know you not whence ye are;
depart from me, all ye workers of iniquity.
28 There shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth, when ye shall
see Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob, and all the prophets, in the
kingdom of God, and you yourselves thrust out.
29 And they shall come from the east, and from the west, and
from the north, and from the south, and shall sit down in the
kingdom of God.
30 And, behold, there are last which shall be first, and there
are first which shall be last.
31 The same day there came certain of the Pharisees, saying unto
him, Get thee out, and depart hence: for Herod will kill thee.
32 And he said unto them, Go ye, and tell that fox, Behold, I
cast out devils, and I do cures today and tomorrow, and the third
day I shall be perfected.
33 Nevertheless I must walk today, and tomorrow, and the day
following: for it cannot be that a prophet perish out of Jerusalem.
34 O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, which killest the prophets, and stonest
them that are sent unto thee; how often would I have gathered
thy children together, as a hen doth gather her brood under her
wings, and ye would not!
35 Behold, your house is left unto you desolate: and verily I
say unto you, Ye shall not see me, until the time come when ye
shall say, Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord.
2nd Lesson Questions -
If I were to knock on the door to eternity today, what would Jesus say to me? What would I say to Him? (V. 25-27) RESOLVE.
