Bartholomew

One of the twelve apostles, Bartholomew was born at Cana in Galilee. According to tradition, he is thought to be the disciple Nathanael, who was introduced to Our Lord by Philip.

Jesus found him to be a man with an innocent and simple heart, as it took little to convince Bartholomew that Our Lord was the Son of God. May God give the same simplicity of heart to us all, as we meditate on Him.

"Lord, thou hast searched me out and known me: thou knowest my downsitting and mine uprising." (The day's Introit, page E 107, The People's Anglican Missal)

The above oil is by Valentin de Boulogne, and is entitled "the Martyrdom of Bartholomew.
