Edward became king of England, being chosen as successor of his father, King Ethelred the Unready, in 1042. A holy man, Edward purportedly gave generously to the poor and allowed his subjects direct access to him. He founded the monastery of Westminster Abbey.
"Blessed is the man that feareth the Lord: he hath great delight in his commandments" (Ps. 112). (From the day's tract, page E 123, The People's Anglican Missal).
