Sedona Jazz at the Church Home Page
Renee - who will be accompanied by pianist Steve Sandner of Sedona - is a long time Phoenix AZ resident, gigging throughout the city and state.
She was born in Philadelphia, and music was more than a way of life for her. Her father was a member of the world renowned Ink Spots and her mother a local legend, having recorded duets with Terry Johnson of the Flamingos in Detroit's Motown Studios along side of greats such as Smokey Robinson, and Marvin Gaye.
Renee is multi-gifted, doing pop, gospel and jazz, and is driven by true passion and love of music. Her music is shockingly honest and emotionally charged. Listeners find her sound somehow familiar, but one that is refreshingly original and inviting. A powerful voice combined with a passionate delivery, her music captures the listener and doesn't let go.
The evening concert will be a night of standard Jazz ballads, with an hour of dancing under the stars on the Church Terrace, upon the concert's conclusion - weather permitting, of course!
Renee's website is HERE - and here's a video of Renee with the Judy Roberts Trio, at a gig in Payson, AZ.
Billy Mitchell will lead the Billy Mitchell Trio for the evening concert, consisting of himself on piano and vocals, Zirque Bonner on bass and Adam Clark on the drums.
Billy is a stalwart pianist and producer who now lives now in Los Angeles, CA
He played the piano as a child, but didn't get serious about music until he entered Morehouse College. While pursuing a political science degree he joined the school jazz band and was soon playing gigs in and around Atlanta. In 1970 Mitchell moved to Los Angeles to pursue his career and was soon backing up such artists as Gloria Lynn, Ester Phillips, Randy Crawford and Linda Hopkins, to name a few.
Billy has appeared at many international festivals including the Monterey Jazz Festival, Playboy Jazz Festival, Heineken World Music Festival, International Jazz Festival, Pori Jazz Festival, Sedona Jazz on the Rocks, and countless club appearances. His solo career has included appearances in film, most notably Clint Eastwood's "Bird." In 1999 America West Airlines awarded Mitchell the Jazz For The Next Generation Award for his continued work with young musicians. His work as a clinician has centered on his book, "The Gigging Musician" (Backbeat Books) based on interviews and his articles as a writer for Gig Magazine.
In 2002 Billy founded The Scholarship Audition Performance Preparatory Academy. This program is designed to increase participation of inner-city students in music and arts scholarship competitions. SAPPA works to develop the students' artistic and creative aptitude, ability, desire and skills toward the ultimate goal of applying for and winning arts competitions.
His concert promises to be a great and "thick" musical experience, and since we annouced his concert on our parish blog, everyone - yeah, everyone! - is really excited!

More videos are found on his YouTube, Home page and MySpace sites. So, check them out and enjoy them.
Tickets can be purchased online HERE, and also secured at Saint Luke's on any Sunday during the month that the specific concert takes place, and remember: space is limited, so be sure to secure your tickets as soon as possible! And if you want to pick up your tickets on another day during the week, call the church and talk with Bishop McMannes, and he'll make arrangements for you to do so.
Hope to see YOU @ the Church @ 7pm to meet the musicians and the concerts that follow at 7:30 pm, both Friday & Saturday evening!
