Today's Feast (October 2): Holy Guardian Angels

Angels have enjoyed immense popularity of late in our society: however, it is the Church which truly understands them. They were made by and come from God, as proclaimed by Christians in the Nicene Creed which says that God made all things visible and invisible.

"Angel" means "messenger." Individuals are given a guardian angel to watch over them (Mt. 18:10) and the angels also function for the presentation of prayers to God. (Rev. 8:3) Sent by God to serve us in some capacity, they are pure intelligences, possessing no body.

The guardian angels are those who, out of obedience and love for God their creator, serve Him through aiding us.

We, too, can be messengers for God, willingly serving Him by helping others, for all things in creation are called to serve Him out of love.

"He shall give his Angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways. V. They shall bear thee in their hands, that thou hurt not thy foot against a stone" (Ps. 91). (The day's gradual, page E 120, The People's Anglican Missal).
