INTROIT. Nos autem Gloria. Gal. 6
BUT as for us, it behoveth us to glory in the Cross of our Lord
Jesus Christ: in whom is our salvation, our life, and resurrection:
by whom we were saved and obtained our freedom, alleluia, alleluia.
Ps. 67. God be merciful unto us and bless us: and shew
us the light of his countenance, and be merciful unto us. V.
Glory be.
The Collect.
O GOD, who in the finding of the Cross of our Salvation didst
renew the wonders of thy passion: vouchsafe to grant that through
the ransom once paid upon that Tree of life, we may attain unto
life eternal. Who livest and reignest with the Father.
The Epistle. Philippians 2:5-11
5 BRETHREN: Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ
Jesus:
6 Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be
equal with God:
7 But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form
of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men:
8 And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and
became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.
9 Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a
name which is above every name:(here genuflect)
10 That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things
in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth;
11 And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is
Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
Alleluia, alleluia. V. Ps 96. Tell it out among the heathen:
that the Lord hath reigned from the Tree. Alleluia. V. Sweetest
wood, sweetest iron, that bare so sweet a burthen: which alone
was counted worth to sustain the King of heaven and its Lord.
Alleluia.
The Gospel. St John 3:1-16
1 AT that time: There was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus,
a ruler of the Jews:
2 The same came to Jesus by night, and said unto him, Rabbi,
we know that thou art a teacher come from God: for no man can
do these miracles that thou doest, except God be with him.
3 Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto
thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of
God.
4 Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is
old? can he enter the second time into his mother's womb, and
be born?
5 Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man
be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the
kingdom of God.
6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is
born of the Spirit is spirit.
7 Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again.
8 The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound
thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it
goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit.
9 Nicodemus answered and said unto him, How can these things
be?
10 Jesus answered and said unto him, Art thou a master of Israel,
and knowest not these things?
11 Verily, verily, I say unto thee, We speak that we do know,
and testify that we have seen; and ye receive not our witness.
12 If I have told you earthly things, and ye believe not, how
shall ye believe, if I tell you of heavenly things?
13 And no man hath ascended up to heaven, but he that came down
from heaven, even the Son of man which is in heaven.
14 And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even
so must the Son of man be lifted up:
15 That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have
eternal life. the Creed is said.
OFFERTORY. Ps. 118. The right hand of the Lord
hath the pre-eminence, the right hand of the Lord bringeth mighty
things to pass: I shall not die, but live, and declare the works
of the Lord, alleluia.
SECRET.
WE beseech thee, O Lord, mercifully to look upon this our sacrifice:
that by the same we may be delivered from the violence of our
enemies, and, by the standard of the holy Cross of thy Son Jesus
Christ our Lord, may so tread under foot the crafts and assaults
of our adversaries, that we may ever be stablished with thy sure
defence. Through.
PREFACE OF THE CROSS.
COMMUNION. By the sign of the Cross, deliver us from
our enemies, O Lord our God. Alleluia.
POSTCOMMUNION.
Almighty God, who hast vouchsafed to satisfy us with heavenly
meat, and to refresh us with spiritual drink: we humbly beseech
thee; that as thou hast commanded us to triumph by the Cross
of thy Son Jesus Christ our Lord, the armour of righteousness
appointed for our salvation, so we may by thee be defended against
all the crafts and assaults of the enemy. Through the same.
