I know, O Lord, that thy judgements are right, and that thou of very faithfulness hast cause me to be troubled: my flesh trembleth for fear of thee, and I am afraid of thy judgements (alleluia, alleluia). Ps. ibid. Blessed are those that are undefiled in the way: and walk in the law of the Lord. V. Glory be.

The Collect.
O GOD, The comforter of them that mourn, and the hope of them that put their trust in thee, who didst favourably accept the tears of blessed Monica for the conversion of Augustine her son; grant, we pray thee; that at the intercession of these thy servants, we may so bewail the sins that we have committed, that we may be worthy to obtain the abundant pardon of thy grace. Through.

The Epistle. 1 Timothy 5:3-10
3 Honour widows that are widows indeed.
4 But if any widow have children or nephews, let them learn first to show piety at home, and to requite their parents: for that is good and acceptable before God.
5 Now she that is a widow indeed, and desolate, trusteth in God, and continueth in supplications and prayers night and day.
6 But she that liveth in pleasure is dead while she liveth.
7 And these things give in charge, that they may be blameless.
8 But if any provide not for his own, and specially for those of his own house, he hath denied the faith, and is worse than an infidel.
9 Let not a widow be taken into the number under threescore years old, having been the wife of one man,
10 Well reported of for good works; if she have brought up children, if she have lodged strangers, if she have washed the saints' feet, if she have relieved the afflicted, if she have diligently followed every good work.

Gradual. Ps. 45 Full of grace are thy lips: because God hath blessed thee for ever. V. Because of the world of truth, and meekness, and righteousness: and thy right hand shall teach thee terrible things.
Alleluia.alleluia. V. In thy comeliness and in thy beauty go forth, ride prosperously, and reign. Alleluia.

After Septuagesima, instead of the Alleluia, and verse following, is said:

TRACT. Come, thou bride of Christ, receive the crown, which the Lord hath prepared for thee for ever. V. Ps. 45. Thou hast loved righteousness, and hated iniquity: therefore God, even thy God hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy fellows. V. In thy comliness and in thy beauty go forth, ride prosperously, and reign.

In Eastertide, instead of the Gradual, is said:

Alleluia, alleluia. V. Ibid. In thy comliness and in thy beauty go forth, ride prosperously, and reign. Alleluia. V. Because of the word of truth and meekness and righteousness: and thy right hand shall teach thee terrible things. Alleluia.

The Gospel. St Luke 7:11-17
11 And it came to pass the day after, that he went into a city called Nain; and many of his disciples went with him, and much people.
12 Now when he came nigh to the gate of the city, behold, there was a dead man carried out, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow: and much people of the city was with her.
13 And when the Lord saw her, he had compassion on her, and said unto her, Weep not.
14 And he came and touched the bier: and they that bare him stood still. And he said, Young man, I say unto thee, Arise.
15 And he that was dead sat up, and began to speak. And he delivered him to his mother.
16 And there came a fear on all: and they glorified God, saying, That a great prophet is risen up among us; and, That God hath visited his people.
17 And this rumour of him went forth throughout all Judaea, and throughout all the region round about.

OFFERTORY. Ps. 45. Full of grace are thy lips: because God hath blessed thee for ever, and world without end (Alleluia).

Ibid. Thou hast loved righteousness and hated iniquity: therefore God, even thy God hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy fellows.
