The Proper of Saints
[Missal]

John before the Latin Gate

[Mass 9. Protexisti. Ps. 64 - Common of Saints]

INTROIT. Protexisti Ps. 64.
THOU hast hidden me, O God, from the gathering together of the froward, alleluia: and from the insurrection of wicked doers, alleluia, alleluia. Ps. 64. Hear my voice, O God, in my prayer: preserve my life from fear of the enemy. V. Glory be.

The Collect.
O GOD, who seest the evils that beset us by reason of our sins: grant, we beseech thee; that the glorious intercession of thy Apostle and Evangelist Saint John may be our succour and defence. Through.

The Epistle. Wisdom 5:1-5
1 THEN shall the righteous man stand in great boldness before the face of such as have afflicted him, and made no account of his labours.
2 When they see it, they shall be troubled with terrible fear, and shall be amazed at the strangeness of his salvation, so far beyond all that they looked for.
3 And they repenting and groaning for anguish of spirit shall say within themselves, This was he, whom we had sometimes in derision, and a proverb of reproach;
4 We fools accounted his life madness, and his end to be without honour:
5 How is he numbered among the children of God, and his lot is among the saints!

Or the Epistle from 2 Timothy, Remember, as in Mass 5, Laetabitur.

Alleluia, Alleluia. V. Ps. 89. O Lord, the very heavens shall praise thy wondrous works: and thy truth in the congregation of the Saints. Alleluia. V. Ps. 21. Thou hast set a crown of pure gold upon his head, O Lord. Alleluia.

The Gospel. St Matthew 20:20-23
20 Then came to him the mother of Zebedee's children with her sons, worshipping him, and desiring a certain thing of him.
21 And he said unto her, What wilt thou? She saith unto him, Grant that these my two sons may sit, the one on thy right hand, and the other on the left, in thy kingdom.
22 But Jesus answered and said, Ye know not what ye ask. Are ye able to drink of the cup that I shall drink of, and to be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with? They say unto him, We are able.
23 And he saith unto them, Ye shall drink indeed of my cup, and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with: but to sit on my right hand, and on my left, is not mine to give, but it shall be given to them for whom it is prepared of my Father.

OFFERTORY. PS. 89. O Lord, the very heavens shall praise thy wondrous works: and thy truth in the congregation off the Saints, alleluia, alleluia.

SECRET.
We beseech thee, O Lord, graciously to accept these our prayers and oblations that we, being cleansed by these heavenly mysteries, may obtain of thy great mercy the fulfilment of all our desires. Through.

PREFACE of the Apostles

COMMUNION. Ps. 64.
The righteous shall rejoice in the Lord, and put his trust in him: and all they that are true of heart shall be glad, alleluia, alleluia.

POSTCOMMUNION.
O Lord, we pray thee that this our heavenly bread, wherewith thou hast this day refreshed us: may likewise be our sustenance unto life eternal. Through.

¶ After Easteride, the Mass is taken from the Feast of this Saint on Dec. 27th. In the Secret, the word festival is changed to commemoration, but the prayers and Gospel are as above.
